Day 4 Wrap-Up at the 2010 Easter Bowl - (04/14/2010)

There’s a little bit of confusion as to who will be going after the “Revenge Win” Thursday at the 43rd annual Easter Bowl Spring National Championships being played at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort in the girls’ 18s ITF quarterfinal match between the two Laurens: Herring and Davis.

Would it go to the top-seeded Davis, who lost the girls’ 14s Easter Bowl final to Herring way back in 2007? Or would it go to No. 9 seeded Herring, who recently lost to Davis in a $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Atlanta, 6-1, 6-0?

What does Davis remember about that Easter Bowl match three years ago? “That I won the first game and it was all downhill from there,” Davis said of the 6-4, 6-0 loss to the unseeded Herring.

“It should be a really good match tomorrow,” Herring said. “She beat me pretty bad last time so I’m definitely hoping for a different result this time around.”

Herring, of Greenville, N.C., earned her spot in the quarterfinals with a solid 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Brooke Bolender, the No. 8 seed from Delray Beach, Fla. Davis, of Gates Mills, Ohio, beat Elizabeth Begley of Houston, 6-4, 6-2. “I was missing every shot I took in the first set,” said Davis. “But I never thought I would lose. I just started hitting out and looser and knew it was just a matter of time.”

In another highly anticipated girls’ 18 matchup, No. 11 seeded Ellen Tsay of Pleasanton, Calif., beat Madison Keys, the No. 5 seed from Boca Raton, Fla., 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. “The Easter Bowl is my favorite tournament,” the girls’ 16s winner in 2008 who has recently begun training at the John Newcombe Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas, said. “I was a little nervous at the start but was able to pull through.”

There won’t be too many days in the future when you’re speaking the word upset and

Maria Shishkina in the same sentence. The 11-year-old from Bradenton, Fla., has already signed a professional contract and is represented by Maria Sharapova’s agent Max Eisenbud of IMG. She rolled over No. 3 seeded Mariana Gould of Boise, Idaho, 6-3, 6-4, on Wednesday.

“It’s very beautiful here and I love playing here,” said Shishkina, who doesn’t turn 12 until July. “It’s my first Easter Bowl so I’m looking to win this tournament.”

Number 3-seeded Skylar Morton of Bethseda, Md., is one who won’t be winning the girls’ 16s after getting beat by Maya Jansen of Valleyford, Wash., near Spokane, 6-1, 6-3. It’s been a relatively calm winter in the Pacific Northwest, but Jansen has only been playing outdoors the last four weeks.

Also being upset on Wednesday was top-seeded Daniel Kerznerman of Brooklyn, N.Y., who was destroyed by No. 11 Jordan Belga of Elk Grove Village, Ill., 6-0, 6-1.
