Day 2 Wrap-Up at the 2009 Easter Bowl - (04/13/2009)

Feeling no pressure against one of the U.S.’s top players, unseeded Shelby Rogers scored a huge upset during the first round of the 42nd annual Easter Bowl Spring National Championships. Rogers, of Daniel Island, S.C., dominated throughout, beating the No. 6 seeded Ester Goldfeld of Brooklyn, N.Y., 6-3, 6-2 in the girls’ 18s ITF event.

“This is definitely my biggest win,” Rogers said after the match. “I just felt like everything went my way. She was missing shots out there which allowed me to capitalize and get the breaks I needed.”

The top two seeded girls in the 18s received scares in the first round as No. 1 Lauren Embree of Marco Island, Fla., needed three sets to beat Monica Turewicz of Saratoga, Calif., 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Embree is currently ranked No. 10 in the world ITF rankings.

Kristie Ahn has a WTA world ranking of 323 to earn a No. 2 seed here. She lost her first set to Corona Del Mar’s Cierra Gaytan-Leach 4-6, but came back to post 6-2, 6-4 scores to advance on.

The boys’ 18s singles start on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE EASTER BOWL

To underwrite the outstanding event the Easter Bowl has become, Seena Hamilton says that sponsor support is vital. “They make it possible for us to provide the hospitality and the publicity that distinguishes the Easter Bowl from other events.” Retuning sponsors include Babolat, Gatorade, K-SWISS and American Airlines.  Local sponsors include, Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa, The City of Palm Desert, Palm Springs Desert Resort Communities Convention & Visitors Authority and The Desert Sun.

Event noted for publicizing critical issues- as well as future stars.

The Easter Bowl is considered the most famous and best publicized junior championships in the country.  It has been a launch pad for just about every American who ever made it into a grand slam, including Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Lindsay Davenport, and Andy Roddick, Lisa Raymond, and the Bryan twins.

Hamilton, a former editor and broadcaster, is a well-known PR event marketing consultant that has long been recognized as the voice of American junior tennis and a leading spokesperson in bringing the critical issues of the game to public attention.  In addition, Hamilton produces a nationally-syndicated, prize winning, TV show, giving the tournament distinction as the only junior tournament featured on national television. “I take great pride in the fact that so many players feel the event has such a special quality,” said Hamilton.

Famous tennis stars recognize the special Easter Bowl excitement.  “We played it for six years,” said Bob and Mike Bryan, the world #1 doubles team.  “There are so many special memories.  From the time we were eight, we dreamed of being accepted and made it into the 14s in 1995.  1996 was especially memorable because it was the first year the Easter Bowl had doubles-and we won it!  No other tournament had this special big atmosphere.  Being interviewed by the press and seeing ourselves on TV was very exciting.  We got our first sponsorships at the Easter Bowl and also met our agents.”

In celebration of 42 years, former USTA President, Jane Brown Grimes said, “Through print media and her own TV special, Easter Bowl Founder and Director Hamilton has brought to public attention an awareness of the game and its issues.  From the start, that has been her goal - to create not just a tournament but a true celebration of the game.”

Daily results will be posted on http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments (keyword Easter Bowl). The tournament IDs are: USTA Boys/Girls 14s-16s:  651790209
