Day 4 Wrap-Up at the 2009 Easter Bowl - (04/15/2009)

A day after losing the top-seeded player in the first round of the boys’ 18s at the Easter Bowl Junior Spring Nationals, the top two girls’ players in the ITF 18s event moved on Wednesday. Lauren Embree and Kristie Ahn said they both overcame early-round jitters to advance to the quarterfinals.

Embree, the top-seeded player and No. 10-ranked player in the ITF world rankings, beat fellow Floridian Mary Clayton, 6-3, 6-2. “She’s one of my best friends so it was hard,” said Embree, the former Easter Bowl 14s champion. “I don’t know why I was so nervous early on, but I settled down and finally started playing better. This is my fifth time playing here and my last so it would be great to go out a champion.” Embree will play next year for the University of Florida.

The 16-year-old Ahn, who has won three USTA Pro Circuit Futures events, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jessica Pegula, the No. 13 seed from Boca Raton, Fla. “I’ve tried not to look ahead in the draw,” Ahn said. “I’m just trying to relax and play my best.”

In one of the days bigger upsets, unseeded Frederick Saba of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., beat the No. 7 seed Mitchell Frank of Annandale, Va., 6-0, 6-3.

In the 16s, both top-seeded boys and girls advanced on.

Top-seeded Belinda Niu or Portland, Ore., got past Denise Starr of Boca Raton, Fla., 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. “I was so nervous today,” Niu said. “I think it’s just being No. 1 and having all th\e expectations on me.”

Top-seeded Shane Vinsant of Keller, Texas, defeated Hunter Callahan, Lower Gwynedd, Pa., 6-4, 6-2

The No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 girls’ singles players in the 14s all won matches on Wednesday. Both top-seeded Julia Elbaba (No. 1, Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Jamie Loeb (No. 3, Ossining, N.Y.) play indoors 10 months of the year and had to adjust their games to the windy conditions. “It was tough,” Elbaba said. “Yesterday it was so windy I got pushed over just standing up. But I was able to relax and just pull through.”

Brooke Austin of Indianapolis, Ind.,--sandwiched between the two New Yorkers at the No. 2 position--did the same after dropping her first set to Mariana Gould (No. 13, Boise, Idaho), rallying to win, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-0. Austin dominated the majors in 2008, winning singles and doubles at the USTA National Hard Courts and Clay Courts. She then won 71 straight matches before losing in the quarterfinals of the Junior Orange Bowl. Success is nothing new to Austin, playing in her first Easter Bowl. She finished 2007 with a record of 96-8 record.
