Boys' 16s top seed falls on day of upsets at Easter Bowl - (04/10/2008)
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – San Diego’s Michael Elortegui used his big-gun serve to knock off top-gun Nelson Vick in the third round of the boys’ 16s in one of the many upsets Wednesday at the USTA Easter Bowl Spring Nationals tournament at Rancho Las Palmas.

Elortegui, a 15-year-old who moved from Salinas, Calif., to San Diego to work with the coaches at the Barnes Tennis Center last year, easily blasted serves in the 110s, knocking out No. 1-seeded Vick of Grafton, Wis., 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5), in the match of the day. “I’ve actually been clocked at 127 mph,” said Elortegui, who was fifth last year in the 14s here. “This is definitely one of my biggest wins.”

Evan Song of Henderson, Nev., also had a close match, as he was able to close out No. 3 seed Daniel Ho of Los Angeles, 7-6 (9), 6-4.

“I was up 5-2, 40-15 in the first set, but he battled back and took it to a tiebreak,” said Song. “The tiebreak was intense, but I picked up my serve and finished the last point of the set with an ace. The second set I was up 3-0 and relaxed a little bit and lost my focus, but I held serve to win the match.”

The girls’ 16s top player also fell in the third round, as Lauren Davis of Gates Mills, Ohio, held off Kate Fuller of Suwanee, Ga., 6-4, 6-4. “I would have to rank it as one of my top wins, at least this year,” said Davis, who lost in the final of the girls’ 14s here last year.

The quarterfinals are set in today’s boys’ and girls’ ITF 18s. A day after No. 2 seed Jarmere Jenkins was upset in the first round, No. 1 Bradley Klahn, No. 3 Tennys Sandgren and No. 4 Chase Buchanan each won matches, with Sandgren the only one losing a set on the day.

Fifteen-year-old Christina McHale of Englewood Hills, N.J., beat last year’s finalist and No. 4 seed Nadja Gilchrist, Hilton Head, S.C., 7-5, 6-2, to move into the girls’ 18s quarterfinals. McHale’s sister, No. 5 seed Lauren, didn’t fare as well, as she lost to McCall Jones of Coto De Caza, Calif., in one of the longest matches of the day, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4).

Top-seeded Melanie Oudin of Marietta, Ga., also advanced, with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Oliva Janowicz, Palm Bay, Fla. Next up for Oudin is Nicole Bartnik, Bradenton, Fla. Bartnik beat Alexandra Anghelescu, Weston, Fla., 6-1, 6-3. “She started off solid, and she made some mistakes,” Bartnik said. “Tomorrow I play the No. 1 seed, so I have to do everything well.”

Unseeded Nicole Gibbs, Manhattan Beach, Calif., upset No. 7-seeded Brooke Bolender, Delray Beach, Fla., 6-3, 6-2.

In the girls’ 14s, Kyle McPhillips, Willoughby, Ohio, had an easy time moving on to the quarterfinals, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Victoria Duval, Delray Beach, Fla. McPhillips has dropped just seven games in four matches and has five bagels so far. “It’s getting harder, but I’m just playing better each round,” she said.

In the boys’ 14s, Mitchell Krueger, Aledo, Texas, said he was impressed with the play of his opponent Michael Guzman from Napa, Calif. Krueger, the No. 4 seed, needed three sets to beat Guzman, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. “He’s a good player, a hidden gem,” he said.
