Carleton upsets boys’ 18s top-seed Klahn at Easter Bowl - (04/11/2008)
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – In most cases, the freshest body won Thursday at the Easter Bowl, as the heat kicked into the low 90s, and only the strong survived.

Frank Carleton, the No. 16 seed from Naples, Fla., who lost early in the USTA Spring International boys’ 18s at Carson last week, said he came to the popular tournament here rested and ready for a big upset, and that’s exactly what happened, as he upended No. 1 seeded Bradley Klahn of Poway, Calif., in the ITF boys’ 18s round of 16, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

“I was definitely fresher,” said Carleton, who has not played a full schedule this year because of injury. “I didn’t come here mentally or physically fatigued. This is one of my best wins, definitely.”

Carson 16s champion Gabriela DeSimone of Rancho Santa Fe was also unceremoniously shown the door in the girls’ 16s round of 16. DeSimone was beaten by Belinda Niu of Portland, Ore., 6-4, 6-1. Niu, No. 13, will play No. 2 Ellen Tsay of Pleasanton in the quarterfinals.

Fatigue wasn’t a factor in the girls’ 18s singles, as Carson champion Melanie Oudin of Marietta, Ga., continued her run, advancing to the semifinals with relative ease, 6-1, 6-1, against No. 6 Nicole Bartnik of Bradenton, Fla. Oudin, who also advanced to the doubles semifinals with 13-year-old partner Grace Min, said she still feels strong, despite all the tennis these past two weeks. “My doubles actually helps me in singles,” she said. “It keeps my net game sharp.”

Oudin will play 15-year-old Christina McHale, the No. 15 seed from Englewood Cliffs, N.J., in the semifinals today. She beat McHale the last time they played, 6-0, 6-1, at the Orange Bowl.

In the other semifinal, Aeriel Ellis of Hayward, Calif., plays Lauren Embree of Marco Island, Fla. Ellis beat McCall Jones of Coto De Caza, 6-4, 6-4, and Embree downed Ester Goldfield of Brooklyn, N.Y., 6-0, 6-2. Both players are unseeded.

“The first five games were shaky, but I settled down and converted my shots,” Ellis said. “I was down, 3-2, in the second set and picked up the intensity. She also had about 12 double faults, which obviously helped out quite a bit.”

The No. 2 seed in the boys’ 16s, Clay Thompson of Venice, got past Kurthan Anbarci of Miami, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to today’s quarterfinals.

“I was disappointed after losing the first set, but my coach said I always have to show positive energy, no matter how bad I’m doing” he said. “So I came out in the second set and played really aggressive, and it worked to my advantage."

A day after upsetting top-seeded Kate Fuller in the girls’ 16s, last year’s 14s finalist Lauren Davis of Gates Mills, Ohio, fell to No. 12 seed Sarah Lee of Los Angeles, 6-4, 6-3.

“I was really nervous in the beginning but settled in and played a steady match,” said Lee. “I was down, 3-0, in the second set but started moving my feet and making her work, and she couldn’t jump on it."
