There were no big surprises or upsets on Day 2 Sunday as play continued at the 57th annual FILA Easter Bowl taking place at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
In the Girls’ 14s, top-seeded Madeline Cleary from Moorpark, Calif., has yet to drop a game in her first two matches winning 6-0 four straight times. Cleary takes on Emery Combs (Conway, S.C.) on Monday in the Round of 16. Second-seeded Olivia Lin of Lexington, Mass., and No. 3 and No. 4, Allison Wang from San Jose, Calif., and Anna Scott Laney from Birmingham, Ala., also advanced.
On Saturday, Soo-ah Byun from Salt Lake City, Utah, had the biggest upset of the tourney so far as she eliminated the No. 5 seed Shristi Selvan from Laurel, Md.
In the Girls’ 12s, top-seeded Lucy Dupere (Wake Forest, N.C.) and No. 2 Gabrielle Villegas (Great Neck, N.Y.), both moved on, as did the No. 3, 4 and 5 seeds – Violetta Mamina (Henderson, Nev.), Danielle Han (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Kareena Cross (Los Angeles).
In the Boys’ 14s, top-seeded Rafael Pawar from Essex Fells, N.J., couldn’t have had an easier time winning his first round, 6-0, 6-0, but then had trouble with Johan Lee of Duluth, Ga., dropping the first set, 8-6 in a tiebreaker, before righting the ship to win, 6-1, 6-0, and advance.
In the Boys’ 12s, top-seeded James Borchard (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and No. 2 Evan Fan (Mason, Ohio) moved into the third round with straight-set wins as Borchard downed Sushant Pothula (Frisco, Texas), 6-2, 6-4 and Fan beat Ryan Barr (Alpharetta, Ga.), 6-2 6-0.
The FILA Easter Bowl is a USTA Level 1 Spring National Championship in the 18s, 16s, 14s and 12s for both boys and girls with gold, silver and bronze balls handed out for top finishers in all eight singles and doubles divisions.
