Revenge can be sweet, just ask West Hollywood’s Cordelia Skye.
On Monday, Day 3 of the Easter Bowl Presented by adidas, Skye delivered a statement win, upsetting No. 2 seed Summer Yang of McLean, Va., 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the Girls’ 12s quarterfinals. The victory marked a breakthrough moment for Skye, who had previously lost twice to Yang.
A year ago, Yang knocked Skye out of her first Easter Bowl, the USTA Level 1 Junior Spring Nationals, held annually at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Yang followed that up with another win over Skye at the Winternationals earlier this year.
This time, Skye flipped the script.
“Today I decided I needed to fight more and get more balls back, to extend the rallies,” Skye said. “I tried to make her work harder for every point.”
The adjustment paid off.
Skye, who trains with her father, Owen Williams, a former St. Mary’s college basketball player, on the public courts at Poinsettia and Plummer Park in West Hollywood, is now into her first Level 1 Nationals quarterfinal.
She credits her recent success to improved composure and strength in key moments.
“I’ve been staying a little more calm on the big points,” she said, “and getting a little more power on my serve.”
Girls’ 12s Update
Top seed Chloe Anthony (Lakeville, Mass.) and No. 3 Valentina Singh Carvajal (Morristown, N.J.) both advanced in straight sets. Tuesday’s quarterfinals promise strong matchups, with Anthony set to face No. 6 Alara Buyukuncu, while Singh Carvajal takes on No. 5 Lucy Jiang of Rancho Palos Verdes.
Boys’ 12s Highlights
Top-seeded Dmitriy Flyman (Hallandale Beach, Fla.) continued his dominant run, defeating No. 9 Aleksander Denisov (Redmond, Wash.) 6-1, 6-2. The 12-year-old, playing in his first Easter Bowl, is coming off a Winternationals title and looks in top form.
In Monday’s only seeded matchup, No. 3 Thomas Gamble (Newport Beach) faced William Zhou (Glendale) in an all-SoCal showdown.
